Thank you, Meredith Steiner, for inviting me to spend the day with you! At various times during the day, people I was talking with said that the information and conversations were better than what theyve had opportunities to partake of, before. I heard "depth of thinking and interaction" that I think marks the entire day. We werent celebrating kids books or writers. We werent shying away from hard questions, either. If anyone who was there (or who watches the videos) wants to talk more about anything, please let me know!

DB2 Express C events at universities in Brazil

Just like my other team mates, Ive been on the road for the past week. Last week I delivered a DB2 Viper training course for business partners in Brazil, and next week (May 22 - 26), I will be promoting the use of DB2 Express-C at several of the best universities in Brazil. Im sure they will be impressed by the Viper hybrid data server. If you happen to be in the Sao Paulo area, and would like to attend these events, or meet me in person, send me a note to db2x@ca.ibm.com.

DB2 Express C at IBMs IOD conference!

The rest of the team and I returned home this week after spending last week in sunny Anaheim, California for IBMs Information on Demand (IOD) conference. The conference was a great success this year, I havent heard official #s of attendees but I believe we had something like 6000+ attendees!

There was a lot of interest in DB2 Express-C and I had some great conversations with a number of people . Thanks to everyone that came out and talked to us.

If anyone has any further comments or feedback we would love to hear from you, either by adding comments to this blog, or to this thread in the DB2 Express-C forum

Deals Ahoy! Australian Edition Hyperdimension Neptunia Producing Perfection Is 29 At JB Hi Fi!!

To my surprise a few days ago, I found Hyperdimension Neptunia: Producting Perfection for $29 at JB Hi-Fi. Last I checked it was something like $50 (this was around release day), so this is a really good deal!

I dont know how long the deal is for, so I suggest picking it up as soon as you can. Ive been playing it for the last few days and its quite fun, particularly if youre looking for something light and humourous after a long day at work like I was!

DB2 Express C at JavaOne conference in San Francisco!

Just a quick note to let everyone know that Im in San Francisco right now for the JavaOne conference that runs from May 16-19 at the Moscone Center. All the details are at http://java.sun.com/javaone/sf/ .

This is one of the biggest Java developers conferences in the world, so Im sure there will be at least a few DB2 Express C users attending. Feel free to drop by the DB2 pedestal and say hi, well have some fun stuff as well as some cool demos.

Im looking forward to time Ill spend with students in the P�e Project at Northern New Mexico College. If youre nearby, I hope youll come! My goal in this lecture is to talk about what children are taught in schools. In textbooks and in childrens literature, we tend to see the same problems: factual errors, bias, erasures, and missed opportunities, too. 


Take, for example, a very popular series called Geronimo Stilton. One of them is in Scholastics Arrow (4th-6th grade) flyer for February 2016. The book is Geronimo Stiltons Race Across America. It is a good example of erasure.

In it, Geronimo visits Arizona. Those of you with knowledge of Native people know there are a lot of Native people in Arizona, but there arent any in Race Across America.

I understand that it might have not fit with the story to include Navajo people for Geronimo to interact with when hes on Navajo lands, but throughout the book, there are pages that provide information that doesnt have much to do with the story. In Race Across America, Geronimo and his bike racing team fly to the West Coast aboard a large plane. In that part of the story, theres a page about exercises anyone can do to stretch their limbs when flying. You see these exercises in the airline magazines. Theyre the kind people should do to avoid thrombosis.

So--why not include something about the Navajo Nation and sovereignty rather than pages about Westerns that were filmed in Monument Valley?

Scholastic publishes the series. It also provides teachers with lesson plans to use with the books. Heres a screen capture of one:
