Books in the DB2 on Campus series are written by community volunteers like yourself. If you are interested in updating or translating one of the books in the DB2 on Campus series, please send an email to: db2x at ca.ibm.com.

Hi everyone,
Ive just published a major revamp of the DB2 for Linux HOWTO document, and its available for reading/downloading from:

DB2 Express C University Program
DB2 Express C University Program
Last May I visited several Brazilian universities delivering speeches about DB2 Express-C. The feedback I received was excellent!. This convinced me to start a project I called the "DB2 Express-C University Program". Ive been running this program worldwide since June 2006. By December 2006 I had reached almost 8000 students and teachers!. The program is self-sustainable through its "child" program called "The DB2 Student Ambassador program". You can read more about these programs at our DB2 Express-C Web site . I have posted several pictures of the 2006 University Tour at this site.
For 2007, I will be visiting Argentina in February, Japan in March, and China in April. Im still working out the schedule for other universities worldwide throughout the year. I plan to blog after each visit to a country/city.

DB2 Express C 9 7 4 released!
Improvements include:
- An up to 37% lighter download footprint on Windows and Linux
- Ability to store string match patterns for LIKE conditions in database columns
- Faster indexing and more powerful searches using DB2 Text Search
- Compound triggers for UPDATE, INSERT, and DELETE
Its interesting to note that DB2 Express-C 9.7.4 came out on the cloud first and as a traditional download second. The cloud image template for Rightscale/Amazon EC2 has been available since past Friday.

DB2 9 7 announced set for June release
DB2 9 7 announced set for June release
IBM just announced DB2 9.7, filled with oodles of great new features. It is set to become generally available in June. Theres an overview site, which largely focuses on the many cost savings in self-optimization, self-healing, compression, development, and performance.
Naturally, there are also many new developer and DBA focused features such as:
- Improved locking for better concurrency
- Ability to recompile statements without parameter markers
- Ability to re-use old access plans across fixpack updates
- More functions for string and date manipulation
- New data types such as NUMBER, VARCHAR2, etc.
- Easier casting between data types
- Default parameter values and assignment of parameter values by name
- Boolean, cursor, row and array data type support in procedures
- ROWNUM and ROWID
- Better Python support for DB2
There will be a DB2 9.7 Overview webcast in the Chat with the Lab series on May 6, 11:30 AM EST. Its a great opportunity to ask questions and find out the technical nitty-gritty.

This chat introduces the spatial capabilities of IBM relational databases, focusing on the DB2 LUW Spatial Extender. Much of the business data that we work with has a spatial characteristic, such as customer or office locations, sales regions, hazard polygons or facilities such as utility lines and highways. By representing this spatial information in a relational table as spatial datatypes, SQL queries can incorporate spatial functions to perform spatial analysis in the database. Business value is derived by being able to answer questions like:DB2 with the Spatial Extender is used to answer these questions.

Just like my other team mates, Ive been on the road for the past week. Last week I delivered a DB2 Viper training course for business partners in Brazil, and next week (May 22 - 26), I will be promoting the use of DB2 Express-C at several of the best universities in Brazil. Im sure they will be impressed by the Viper hybrid data server. On March 31, well be holding a DB2 Chat with the Lab aimed specifically at Oracle professionals curious about DB2 database server architecture. As you know, IBM DB2 9.7 introduced a thorough Oracle compatibility mode.
Almost immediately after we announced it, the event filled up completely. More people signed up than the webcast infrastructure allowed, and many had to be turned away.
