Dekes Bar-B-Que - http://dekesbar-b-que.com/
BBQ, Bourbon & Brews

My wife saw this event on livingsocial.com and thought it would be perfect for me...and she was right.

We had an absolute blast at Dekes BBQ.  If you are in or around the Philadelphia, PA area, I highly recommend checking this place out.

At first glance, Dekes Bar-B-Que is a very unassuming mechanics garage.  You only really know you are in the right place by the wondrous smell of large converted oil tanks billowing the smoke of hard oak wood.

The Event
This event at Dekes Bar-B-Que was a 2-part event: Bar-B-Que & Bourbon.  We were split into 2 groups and, first, we were going to learn about Bar-B-Que.

Bar-B-Que
Deke has 3 custom built smokers at his restaurant.  They are mostly all old oil tanks you might find in your basement if you have oil heat.  They are specifically setup to diffuse heat and allow smoke to roll over the meat, flavoring it, and cooking it at low temperatures for long periods of time.

Deke went over all the meats that he smokes and the schedule at which these smokers run.  His smokers will run 24 hours a day from Tuesday mornings until Sunday nights.  At Dekes, the smoke baby-back ribs, St. Louis-style spare ribs, whole chickens, whole chicken wings, pork butts, etc.

After Deke showed us his dry rub ingredients, we were split into 3 smaller groups and were able to make our own rub, place them on a rack of baby-back ribs and throw them on the smoker.  These types of ribs will smoke for 5-6 hours, so we werent able to try our own ribs.  However, it was at this time that Deke brought out some baby-back and St. Louis-style ribs for all of us to try.  They were OUTSTANDING!!

Bourbon
After the Bar-B-Que portion was complete, our group went into the garage for the Bourbon portion.  Martin was very knowledgeable about Bourbon and he was fun to listen to.  We got to sample 3 different types of bourbon as well as learn a great deal about it.  For instance, bourbon can only be produced in the United States and it requires an initial corn mash consisting of 51% alcohol.  I have never had any bourbon prior to this tasting event, but I have had some Jack Daniels.  I was kind of lumping bourbon and whiskey all into the same group, but Jack Daniels is not bourbon.  It comes very close.  Its initial corn mash is 50.8% alcohol, specifically, which does not qualify as bourbon.

Bourbon is cast in brand new oak barrels for a minimum of 2 years, but most seem to stay in the barrel for at least 9 years.  This greatly affects the taste and alcohol content.  The barrels themselves are never used again by bourbon producers, but they are usually sold to wine makers all over the world.  It is its own industry within an industry.

We were able to sample 3 different types of bourbons.

Basil Hayden - http://www.smallbatch.com/basilhaydens
This bourbon is 80 proof and aged for 8 years.

Woodford Reserve - http://www.woodfordreserve.com/
This bourbon is 90 proof.  It is the official bourbon of the Kentucky Derby.  I really enjoyed this bourbon.

Knob Creek - http://www.knobcreek.com/
This bourbon is 100 proof and aged 9 years.  This one was my favorite.

livingsocial.com
The folks over at livingsocial.com have their events down to a science.  You might think that livingsocial.com is just another coupon website, but they are so much more.  You can purchase discounted restaurant coupons, much like you can at a website like groupon.com.  livingsocial.com also allows you to book these types of trips and events, as well as excursions, like African Safaris and Caribbean Getaways.

We got to meet some of the livingsocial.com people and had a great time talking with them and sharing a few drinks.

Overall
What an incredible time.  Aside from a nasty case of shin splints from walking up and down the hills in Manyunk, PA, it was outstanding.  I highly recommend you check it out if you like good Bar-B-Que.

By the way, if your are a Philadelphia Eagles fan, for every game, you can go there and have all you can eat ribs for $15.
